| The Pigeon in the Wider World |
| Once again Jean Hansell has written an extremely interesting book, The Pigeon In The Wider World starts by taking a look back to the early years of c.5200 BC and works its way through the centuries, to the present day.
Accompanied with wonderful illustration and photo’s throughout, The Pigeon In The Wider World is a must for pigeon fanciers in all walks of life. This well written and extensively researched book explores the relationship between the pigeon and man, its uses and early domestication and how our feathered friends are regarded with respect in many parts of the world.
I admit I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I found it truly fascinating to learn how these remarkable birds were, in a way, worshipped along with Gods and Goddesses. Or how invaluable they have proved to be, not only in times of war, but also for example, many years ago they would relay information on the progress of the annual flooding of the Nile; or that the Greeks liberated white doves to prohibit warfare during the original Olympic Games; or indeed that the Indian Police, until relatively recently used pigeons as messengers untill satellite communication took over and how just a few years ago a memorial was erected in London depicting three pigeons leading the way in flight on the Animals in War memorial with its moving epithet, ‘they had no choice’.
The Pigeon In The Wider World reveals the true value of the pigeon and I would highly recommend it. I would like to thank and congratulate Jean on a fascinating book.
